BRHood: So, we got a few asks that I rightfully ignored asking us what “basic” meant. And, in the DLOTB tag (because people still think they should bitch about us and then tag it; like we AIN’T tracking the fucking tag), someone also questioned what it means.
While a few people who asked are not trolls or even bad people (in fact, they are followers who often give support), the question itself is the epitome of “basic.”
Now, without using the white-man’s dictionary to define basic, let’s think of how we use the word “basic” in everyday non-black/AAVE language. Because if we THOUGHT about how we use the term ‘basic” and it’s variants, it should take all of 2 seconds to know what we’re saying when we call someone “basic.”
So, when you first start learning things, you have to learn the “basics.” When someone simplifies what you may have said, you may respond “basically.” Or, to simplify something in general, you’ll say “basically.” For example:
In the context of racism, there is a power aspect that prevents certain groups from being victims of racism. Those at the top of said hierarchy can never face racism due to being the ones with the most power and privilege. BASICALLY, because white people are the ones in power, they will never face racism.
See how the first two sentences were more fleshed out while the last sentence just says what I said in those first sentences only quicker and simplified? That’s what “basically” means; it means we’re about to break this down in terms even a middle student can understand.
So when we call someone “basic,” we are telling you that you are not on our level of thinking. We’re over here talking about things that are beyond your level of comprehension. We’re learning SAT words while you’re trying to get the hang of your ABC’s. We’re finding out limits using derivatives while you’re still trying to remember your times tables.
You’re trying to look at things on a basic level of understand that prevents you from even beginning to grasp what we’re talking about. BASICALLY, we’re saying you’re not on our level.
Now that you know what “basic” means, the next step is learning how to not be basic. My only advice is get on our level. Or spend your time crying because what we’re spitting is too much for you to understand.
Don’t be basic bitches, y’all.
