“You can still catch most of your favorite Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies classics on the Cartoon Network and elsewhere; many have been in heavy syndication for a half-century. But there are a dozen or so that have rarely been seen on television since the 1960s, which while not having been banned outright have been at the very least pulled from circulation by embarrassed copyright holders. While other cartoons had been “cleaned up” with a few cuts — a blackface character removed here, an off-putting joke edited out there — these dozen or so cartoons were thought to be so thoroughly riddled with political incorrectness that they were unsuitable for airing no matter how much cutting was done. A fascinating part of our nation’s troubled history, I wanted to share them here (even though I’m probably about to incite a massive flame war between the “I can’t believe they made those!” and “what’s the big deal?” factions).”

CC: Click the link (or the image itself) to be enraged by the extensive video links to the racist cartoons. Classic fairytales were taken, parodied and made to portray stereotypical caricatures of people of color. From what I’ve watched so far, the list is predominantly videos aimed at mocking Black people but I did see a video aimed at mocking the Japanese (made during WW2) as well as a video mocking Pacific Islanders.  Oh God, just look at the names of the videos, eh?
“Coal Black an’ de Sebben Dwarfs”
“Goldilocks and the Jivin’ Bears -_-“
Southern Fried Rabbit (the video was removed but I’m going to showcase some images here of Bugs Bunny, yes, THE Bugs Bunny, in Blackface)

I noticed that some of the videos were removed by the youtube posters as well as removed because of Warner Bros copyright claims. Can’t have our disgusting history displayed for everyone to see, now can we Warner Bros?
Also, this reminded me of the racist Korra fanart someone drew. You know, the one where she was Black, big lipped and waterbending “purple drank”. Not to mention the usual bucket of fried chicken. So clever.
These images, these portrayals and these “jokes” made it okay for people of color to be (just to name a few): dehumanized, tortured, raped, discriminated against, shunned, KILLED. This is why these images and these portrayals and these “jokes” will never be acceptable. The historical background, the pain they caused, the VIOLENCE they facilitated…will NEVER be acceptable.
So stop laughing.
