to the person who just started learning about buddhism, i was raised buddhist myself and i don't find it offensive. it's also not a bad thing to be atheist and not believe all the teachings literally (i'm like that myself and buddhists generally don't believe in a god). a lot of the people at my temple are like that too. i asked my parents (who're more religious than me) about it and they didn't see a problem with what you're doing either. i'm sure some people disagree, just sharing my thoughts.
