I'm really sorry for asking this, but I've been slowly learning about Buddhism. I bought some prayer beads. I don't ever wear the beads, they hang on my closet door so I will remember to meditate and serve as a reminder to practice the eight precepts. I'm an atheist, so I don't believe all of the teachings literally. Do you think I'm being offensive to anyone by having beads or following a lot of Buddhist principles? I am white and was raised as a Methodist.

BRHood:

Short answer: There’s a “isthisracism” (or something like that) blog that can answer this. We focus on whitewashing and the aspects of THAT out of the big topic of racism. We’re not really a blog to answer these unless it deals with representation of PoC in the media and whatnot.

Long answer: Unless you are a studying and practicing Buddhist, imo, it probably is fucked up. It would be like learning about Islam and while not really being Muslim but just liking some of the ideas and trying to apply it as a personal philosophy on life, you wear a Hijab (you don’t wear prayer beads, but still). I mean, you can make a sign of the eight precepts and post them by your door to remember them or something. Why do you need something specific to that religion when you’re not practicing? It def comes off as inappropriate.
