Sorry for submitting, to long for ask. Hi, I’m the one who submitted the picture of Jessica Biel as Pocahontas, I’m not so sure this is what you meant by “messaging” you, and im not sure im going too far by submitting this, but Im going to try to explain my opinion so people understand. When I submitted this I wasn’t aware that Jessica Biel was of Native Ancestry. As soon as i saw the photo I actually became really sad, whitewashing is a big, deep rooted issue for me, and my mind sort of flashed back to when i was a little girl and i desperately wanted lighter skin and colored eyes, then i thought of all the other little girls who are also desperate for people to look up to in the media, people who look like them. She doesn’t look Native, and it hurts to see her portraying someone who wasn’t European at all. Pocahontas was such an influential woman in history, she was one of the Disney princesses I looked up to growing up (the other being Jasmine), she had dark skin, she wasn’t white. Its not right to choose the lightest skinned people out of an ethnic group and have them represent that group. they could have picked some one else. I am not saying by any means I have the right to dictate what a Native American woman should look like, maybe I was mistaken. I dunno. Im sorry if i offended anyone or if i caused trouble, I guess i was just thinking to much into things. Edit: Grammar and shitty writing skills. also: http://www.imdb.com/list/R0EAcZ5CP2A/ TayTay: Thank you for submitting this. Clarification is always good. You didn’t cause trouble- this just sparked a discussion. Do not be sorry for thinking critically. |
