On the one hand it would be good to write to the organiser of an event and ask them to ban blackface, but in practice, there are several problems with this approach; firstly, the even organiser/s must be aware that blackface is unacceptable, secondly, they must consider it important enough to issue and publicise a ban, thirdly, they must consider a "punishment" for those who break the ban. And finally, their must be a clear, accepted definition of blackface which they can check against.

BRHood: I agree (ref: an ask about getting cons to ban brownface). I think that first part is going to be the hardest though, followed by the last part. The punishment could easily be, like if you break a dress code or whatever, having to leave the con and maybe having your pass revoked for the weekend. But getting the organizer(s) to think it’s an actual problem will be hard. There’s this general idea in the Geekdom that “geeks” aren’t racist and nothing they do can be problematic. As if the Geekdom is free of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, because they are “different” than mainstream.

The last part is also hard because there are people who do a slight tan or put on a slightly darker shade of makeup that isn’t TOO much darker than their normal tone, but still noticeable. And they might not count that, even though it IS brownfacing. :/ So, if you can find people to acknowledge those two things, we’ll be set. But that’s going to take a looooooot of work.

BTW, you’re from the UK, aren’t you? Or the Caribbeans? I can tell because you wrote “organiser” with an “s.” -checks your blog- GO ME! I KNEW IT! Ignore me, I just get a kick out of those spelling differences. It’s so fun to me. Ask SoLDN, I get excited every time she does it. XD
